Make-Ready

Make-ready is the utility field work required to modify utility poles before new cables or equipment can be safely attached.

What Is Make-Ready?

In joint use operations, asset owners and attachers must work together to prepare poles for attachments. Before an attaching company attaches a piece of equipment or cable, the partner companies must agree upon and sign a joint use agreement. Then, they submit the required permit to attach to the asset owner for review.

Companies must also prepare attachments to meet legal and compliance requirements, which include vertical distance and clearance minimums.

Asset owners must ensure the utility pole meets safety standards and is able to safely take on another attachment. They may need to rearrange existing attachments, replace hardware, upgrade the pole itself, reinforce the pole, or meet applicable construction requirements.

The make-ready process is as much a financial consideration as it is a procedural one. As such, asset owners and attachers must collaborate closely to ensure the process goes smoothly and safely.
